Bairrada is a DOC of the Beiras region in the central northern area of Portugal. It is known for producing rich, deeply colored, long ageing red wines made from Baga, Castelão and Rufete grapes. Coimbra was known as “the city of knowledge” during Roman times and this moniker still holds true today as it is the home to one of the oldest, active universities in Europe. Coimbra was established in Roman times. However it was during the Late Middle Ages that Coimbra began to evolve into a major cultural center.
You will get to see and feel:
After a comfortable journey on your vehicle enjoying a huge array of landscapes, you will arrive at a Bairrada winery where you will stroll idly between the vineyards, get to know the cellar, and taste their wines. Because it is near the sea, the climate is typically Atlantic, with mild and rainy winters, a hot but slightly windy summer. During the ripening period of the grapes, this region registers a great thermal amplitude, sometimes the difference reaches the 20ºC. This phenomenon is responsible for maintaining the acidity of the grapes, giving freshness to its wines. Due to this factor, the region is very renowned for the production of sparkling wines that need the kind of high acidity that the cool Bairrada climate delivers.
After the visit, you will have the opportunity to taste a Portuguese delicacy: “Roasted Piglet from Bairrada”. This recipe was and still is gently cherished by the Coimbra inhabitants, especially on festive occasions and on New Year’s Eve/Day. This dish owes its roots to the Roman civilization, and up until today maintains high popularity as a gastronomic delicacy. Moreover, it was recently considered to be one of the 7 Wonders of Portuguese Gastronomy, in the category “Meat”.
In the afternoon and finally Coimbra. Your walking tour begins in the University Library and Coimbra’s 12th-century cathedral. This walk will take you through the historic center with buildings dating back as far as 957. In the Monastery of Santa Cruz you can see the tombs of the 1st and 2nd Portuguese Kings. Along the way, you can often find Fado sittings, performed to perfection by university students.
