The history of Fátima is associated with three children: Lúcia and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, who on 13 May 1917, while guarding their sheep witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary who told them 3 secrets consisting of a series of apocalyptic visions and prophecies. The last apparition occurred on 13 October 1917, and was witnessed by 70,000 pilgrims, who saw the Miracle of the Sun. Today, Fatima is a regular pilgrimage site along Portugal’s famous pilgrim route.
You will get to see and feel:
With the full-day tour, we begin in front of the chapel where Mary appeared. Mass and rosary prayer is open for attendance. The new church, the grand basilica, and all surroundings are open for viewing. After that, we can take lunch in the nearby village and then visit the homes of the shepherd children – frozen in time to give a glimpse into village life in the early 1900s.
On your way back to Lisbon and according to the available time you may have time to visit the famous Monastery of Batalha, a Gothic monastery that was commission by King João in gratitude for the decisive victory in the battle of Aljubarrota (1385). This battle allowed Portugal to remain independent. Another excellent choice would be a tour in the Medieval walled city of Óbidos that was for the first time presented to the Queen of Portugal in 1214 on her wedding day, a tradition that continued until the 19th century.
The half-day tour allows a lesser combination of the options noted above.
