Located close to the estuary of the Douro River in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centers. Its settlement dates to the Roman Empire where it was a prominent outpost named Portus Cale – a name that has been referred to as the origin of the name "Portugal". Today the city of Porto shares its modern day name with its world famous commodity, Port Wine. Upon visiting the city you can still see the flat boat barges filled with wine barrels transported down river to the cellars for the ageing of the precious nectar. River cruises are often available and the city is easy to enjoy on foot.
You will get to see and feel:
Your private Porto walking tour starts uptown in Clérigos Tower which offers unrivaled views over Porto from its 76m-high tower. From here you’ll even get a chance to see the world-famous Lello bookstore and hear how its connection to Harry Potter has made it one of the most popular bookstores on the planet today.
Then you will walk downhill to visit monuments and neighborhoods, including St. Bento Train Station; observe the astounding azulejos (hand-painted tiles) in its main hall covered in tiles. From here we will also visit the Majestic and the incredible Bulhão Market where you will immerse in the real Porto. This lovely market is where farmers initially came to sell their fruit and vegetables.
We will stop for lunch facing the city, enabling you time to enjoy the magnificent view towards the north bank of Douro river.
Then we will journey to the Cathedral ending close to the river in Ribeira, where everybody enjoys their Port Wine. We will walk on the very popular Ribeira, explore the neighborhood and take in the stunning views by the riverside on the Douro River or wind down your afternoon with some drinks on our Port Wine Cellar for a tasting tour.
One thing’s for sure; most of the things that you can do in Porto can be expressed and found on a good sip of a Vintage Port. This is only a sample of things to do in Porto…
