Anticipating the third Napoleonic invasion that was planned to capture the capital, three defensive lines with 152 fortifications were secretely built on a rugged 85 km area, between the Tagus River and the Atlantic. Travel back in time through the six routes that cross mountains and valleys, histories and their protagonists and discover a unique patrimony of Portugal, in the company of the wines of the Atlantic coast.
You will get to see and feel:
The Lines of Torres Vedras, or simply Linhas de Torres, are the set of fortifications and other defensive works located on the peninsula of Lisbon. In the context of the Peninsular War (1807-1814) against Napoleon, they were designed with the purpose of preventing the Napoleonic invasion army from reaching the capital of the Kingdom of Portugal or, in case of defeat, allowing the safe retreat of the British Army. In the Third French Invasion, the Lines of Torres Vedras prevented André Masséna’s army to reach Lisbon and eventually lead to its withdrawal from Portugal.
The visits will be made to these lines of defense in the company of certified technicians and will involve visits to a small museum where theory will be thoroughly explained.
Lunch on a typical restaurant of the Region and enjoy the Portuguese cuisine; a mixture of Mediterranean traditions and Atlantic products.
