You will get to see and feel:
The history of viticulture in the Tejo includes proof of Phoenician and Roman presence in the region. By the end of the first half of the 13th century, some 30,000 pipes of wine had been exported to England.
You will begin our adventurous day with a visit to 2 of the best-known wineries of the Tejo region. The soils vary according to the proximity of the river. The field or flatlands are very productive areas that lie along the waterfront. Due to the flooding of Tejo river, it is common that the vineyards in the area sometimes become completely submerged.
You will get to know and experience the full-bodied spicy reds from Ribatejo, mineral whites, and dazzling sparkling wines. The existing vineyards have predominantly Portuguese varieties such as the white ” Fernão Pires”. The red wines are produced basically out of “Trincadeira”, “Castelão”, “Touriga Nacional”; and more recently Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Alicante Bouschet, and Syrah. Some estates have buildings dating from the XVIII century.
For your delicious lunch, we will take you to a friend´s best-kept secret: a regional restaurant where you will be served the most delicious local gastronomy, along with the kind of wine that comforts your soul.
Finally, you will follow the “Avieiros” route, which was created in the 20th Century when the fishermen from Vieira de Leiria beach, on the West Atlantic Coast, facing serious difficulties, especially during the winter, decided to move to the river Tagus trying their luck as river fishermen.
As they moved in with their families, they started to build wooden shacks built on top of long poles (stilt houses). These poles that were once used to prevent the sand from covering their houses, would now keep their possessions away from the seasonal river floods.
Nowadays you can also experience the “Avieiros” route, that takes you from Valada do Ribatejo to Escaroupim village whilst you enjoy the beauty of an unknown Ribatejo, tales and traditions, the unique vegetation, the Lusitan horses that are raised freely on the “Horses Island”, the White Herons, the Cormorants, the Woodcocks, the Kingfishers, and the fishing eagles.
