Embora os tintos de mistura n\u00e3o sejam novos (s\u00e3o produzidos h\u00e1 s\u00e9culos em todo o mundo), gra\u00e7as a uma s\u00e9rie de en\u00f3logos talentosos e a comerciantes de vinhos ainda mais inteligentes, estes vinhos s\u00e3o uma tend\u00eancia aparentemente impar\u00e1vel.<\/p>\n<p>O &#8220;Portuguese Red Blend&#8221; \u00e9 um termo flex\u00edvel utilizado para descrever as numerosas e variadas composi\u00e7\u00f5es de vinhos tintos de lote elaborados a partir de castas aut\u00f3ctones portuguesas. Quando misturados, os vinhos destas tr\u00eas \u00e1reas beneficiam e contribuem uns para os outros de uma forma que gera um vinho mais poderoso e completo. Durante a nossa visita, achei fascinante ver como os produtores de vinho conhecem cada cent\u00edmetro da sua terra e compreendem onde os pontos fortes e fracos podem ser melhor utilizados nos diferentes estilos de vinho que produzem.<\/p>\n<p>Historicamente, as vinhas do Douro eram plantadas com uma mistura de castas aut\u00f3ctones (s\u00e3o permitidas at\u00e9 90 castas para utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o no vinho do Porto), e muitas vinhas ainda o s\u00e3o, ao ponto de os propriet\u00e1rios e en\u00f3logos n\u00e3o saberem exatamente quantas castas crescem em cada uma das suas vinhas. Este tipo de planta\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 designado por &#8220;field blend&#8221; e \u00e9 um elemento not\u00e1vel do vinho do Porto.<\/p>\n<p>Variedades como a Touriga Nacional e a Tinta Roriz (nome portugu\u00eas para a Tempranillo) s\u00e3o relativamente bem conhecidas e frequentemente produzidas como vinhos varietais, embora os vinhos tintos de lote sejam muito mais comuns. \u00c0s castas Touriga Franca e Tinta Barroca juntam-se as especialidades regionais Castel\u00e3o, Sous\u00e3o, Trincadeira das Pratas, Baga, Alfrocheiro Preto e muitas outras. As castas internacionais Cabernet Sauvignon e Syrah s\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m inclu\u00eddas nas misturas de vinhos tintos com uma frequ\u00eancia crescente.<\/p>\n<p>Tradicionalmente, estes vinhos t\u00eam sido rotulados de acordo com a regi\u00e3o em que foram cultivados, em vez da composi\u00e7\u00e3o varietal do seu conte\u00fado. No entanto, as pr\u00e1ticas de loteamento no vinho portugu\u00eas n\u00e3o s\u00e3o t\u00e3o complexas como eram no passado e as conven\u00e7\u00f5es modernas de rotulagem ajudaram a desmistificar a produ\u00e7\u00e3o vin\u00edcola do pa\u00eds. Os vinhos que antigamente eram rotulados simplesmente como Douro ou D\u00e3o come\u00e7aram a conter (h\u00e1 mais ou menos 20 anos) algum texto no contra-r\u00f3tulo que explicava ao consumidor a composi\u00e7\u00e3o e as propor\u00e7\u00f5es da garrafa.<\/p>\n<p>Tivemos o grande prazer de nos sentar \u00e0 mesa da cozinha e desfrutar de um almo\u00e7o tradicional de trabalhadores das colheitas com o encantador e hospitaleiro Johnny Graham, fundador do Churchill&#8217;s. Estava muito entusiasmado por partilhar connosco o seu ponto de vista sobre os vinhos da regi\u00e3o. Ele disse: &#8220;O verdadeiro vinho do Porto tem tudo a ver com a mistura. Uma mistura de diferentes vinhas cria poder e a capacidade de um vinho envelhecer durante d\u00e9cadas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Assim, para al\u00e9m de uma mistura de castas, os vinhos de diferentes regi\u00f5es s\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m combinados para tirar o m\u00e1ximo partido dos melhores aspectos de cada uma delas.
