Fátima: the adoration of the Virgin Mary

The history of Fátima is linked to three children: Lúcia and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, whom on 13 May 1917, witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary, who told them 3 secrets about apocalyptic visions and prophecies. The last apparition happened on 13 October 1917 and was witnessed by 70,000 pilgrims, who saw the Miracle of the Sun. Nowadays, Fatima Sanctuary is a regular pilgrimage site along Portugal’s famous pilgrim route.

Start your Adventure

Leaving Lisbon, our first stop will be in front of the chapel where Mary appeared. In Fatima Sanctuary, mass and rosary prayer is open for attendance and the new church, basilica and all surroundings are open for viewing. After this, we will have lunch in the nearby village and then visit the homes of the Shepherd Children – frozen in time to give a glimpse into village life in the early 1900s.

On your way back to Lisbon, depending on your interests, we may have time to visit the famous Monastery of Batalha, a Gothic monastery that was built by order of King João I, in gratitude for the victory in the battle of Aljubarrota (1385), which guaranteed Portugal’s independence.

In alternative,  we can go for a tour in the medieval walled city of Óbidos, called Town of Queens and one of the best preserved and charming medieval portuguese towns.
