Romantic Sintra and the Wines of Colares

Once named Hill of the Moon, the energetic and mystical connotation of Sintra’s mountain comes since ancient times, also associated to its micro-climate that surrounds it with a magical mist. Making part of its natural and cultural richness, we find the wines of Colares, which for many are the ones who resemble more their French counterparts.

This exciting day starts with one of the highlights: Palácio da Pena, an astonishing fairy tale castle, located on one of the highest peaks of the Sintra mountain. Here you’ll experience a majestic and romantic atmosphere, while enjoying the most amazing combination of architectural styles, colors, and shapes that you can find in Portugal. While driving up the mountain, you will have the chance to see stunning mansions from the 19th century, like the Biester Palace, where the movie “The Ninth Gate” by Roman Polanski had scenes filmed.

While visiting the historic center of Sintra you will realize why so many artists have chosen Sintra to live! The beauty of the lush landscape and the gothic romantic architecture of the old buildings can really make you feel dazzled; plus, you will also taste some of the best Portuguese conventual pastries!

Lunch will take place in a typical Restaurant, with the Atlantic Ocean at your feet! By the afternoon, you will visit one winery in Colares Wine Region. Located between Sintra mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, Colares region is the westernmost demarcated region of continental Europe and the smallest still-wine producing region in Portugal. Here you will get to know its terroir: ungrafted and pre-phylloxera vines, unique grape varieties (Ramisco and Malvasia de Colares), unusual deep sandy soils, and salty sea winds.

On your way back to Lisbon, we may find time to pass on the charming Cascais!
